I recently won the Yale Prize Teaching Fellowship.
Here are some student evaluations from Feminist Ethics:
“This has, hands down, been the best writing course I've taken in my entire career as a student. Moya has been so incredibly helpful in further developing my skills as a writer, both stylistically, argumentatively, and grammatically. Through taking this course, I feel as if I have finally found my own voice, and it has shined through in everything that I have written this semester, both in this class and out.”
“This is by far the best course I have taken at Yale so far, and I would recommend it to anyone who has felt frustrated with traditional philosophy courses, wants to improve their academic writing, or wants to ground their feminist political views in theory. The course was a lot of work, but all of the work felt meaningful. Moya is absolutely brilliant and gives great, detailed feedback on all of your work.”
“Moya genuinely reminds me of the late bell hooks in the way they have taught the course and have created a safe space for the exchange of ideas.”
“Moya always gave copious feedback on our essays -- both written comments and 10-12 minute audio recordings describing the strengths and weaknesses of our work. Additionally, they gave us a chance to turn in a third draft of the paper, so we could actually implement the feedback and focus on the learning process beyond the point of receiving a grade. This emphasis on the process of learning -- engaging in peer workshops and writing lessons throughout the semester -- allowed me to measurably track my improvement and become invested in my work beyond all other classes I've taken. Moya also created an incredible community in our classroom, with daily check-ins that allowed each member of the class share a piece of their life and be vulnerable with one another. This ritual of sharing and gradual friendship deeply enriched the learning environment, as we all got to know each other's backgrounds and became a cohesive group of thinkers, comfortable enough to challenge each other and grow together… I actually think Moya is the best Prof I have had at Yale, and am really eager to take another class with them. I would recommend them as a teacher to anyone who asks, and I hope the philosophy department adequately celebrates Moya: they are an exceptional educator.”
“Strengths - intelligence, kindness, intention with which they live and lead, care for their students, care in making the syllabus, curiosity to learn alongside us, respect of us (they never made any of us feel belittled for our ideas despite definitely knowing and contemplating these things much more than us previously and being an amazing writer etc), creativity in teaching how they think best ... they introduced so many amazing ways of teaching that I'd never seen more like the voice memo comments, grade only upon request, check ins at the beginning of class, extra little writing excercises. These thinking outside the box made the class SO FREAKING AMAZING and its all thanks to Moya. Basically every Yale prof should be like Moya. Genuinely the University and WORLD would be better off. Weakness - literally none. They're AMAZING.”
And here are some from Philosophy, Gender, and Patriarchy:
“Moya was a phenomenal TF. They always went above and beyond to make section useful and engaging despite the challenges of doing so over zoom. Moya perfectly balanced discussing class material with developing related (but not explicitly mentioned) skills to develop students as students of philosophy. Moya was also excellent at fostering an inclusive class environment where students feel like they can ask anything without fear of being laughed at or mocked. All around the best TF I've had -- engaging, inclusive, dedicated, and a great educator.”
“LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM! Moya could not have been a better TA. They were always willing and excited to engage with students, often staying for almost an hour after section to discuss the readings or any other questions we had. Their use of retrieval practices was so incredibly helpful, allowing us to bring forward the things that we had learned weeks ago which led to better discussions as we synthesized past readings with the current ones. They were extremely encouraging when it came to paper feedback, and just validating in general. Anyone would be lucky to have a class with Ms. Mapps because they are absolutely amazing!”
“Moya was one of the best TAs I've ever had! They made section such a blast! They helped lead such great and insightful conversations and allowed enough space for us to make our own thoughts and conclusions. They were also super helpful throughout the essay writing process. The mini deadlines leading up to the final essay deadline were extremely helpful in managing our time as we worked on our essays. Moya provided great supplemental readings on feminist philosophy as well as essay writing and argument mapping. Moya was such a joy to learn from! I will definitely be signing up for any other class they teach in the future.”
